Rice experiment: Power of positive thinking

You may have heard of Dr Masaru Emoto, a Japanese researcher who has demonstrated that what we say and think can change the molecular structure of water. Some of the most fascinating experiments he has done include labelling bottles of water with positive / negative messages. The water crystals changed their shape accordingly: positive message = beautiful crystal shape, negative message = deformed shape, dark. He also conducted experiments with music. It's unfair to simplify like this - because you must see the pictures - but basically classical music = beautiful crystals, heavy metal = deformed, unrecognisable.

Another experiment he has done is with rice and this is what I decided to try at home. I took two sterilised jars and put cooked rice in each. Although he did his experiment with the messages "Thank you" and "You fool", I decided on "We love you" and "We hate you".

Some more views of the rice. Both exactly the same rice in exactly the same jars. Once we'd put the rice in there, we did not open the jars until the experiment was over.

I got my son to participate in this because I also wanted him to understand the power of positive thinking. So we talked to the two jars of rice for one week. (Usually the experiment is supposed to last a month but we got results really quickly.) We cooed and even kissed the "We love you" jar, whilst directing all hateful thoughts at the other jar - we yelled, snarled, hissed. You get the idea.

One week later, it was quite clear which jar was which.

I hardly need to point out that on the left is the "We love you" rice and on the right is the "We hate you" rice.

The "We love you" rice had a few mouldy patches. I don't think this was supposed to happen so I think these might have been from the sunlight - I'd left these in the kitchen. But its overall appearance is still good, unchanged, white.

The "We hate you" rice, on the other hand, wasn't just about isolated patches of green... It became dark and furry all over. It looked disgusting.

I was shocked with the results. Even though they were what I had expected, I didn't think the difference would be so glaringly obvious, especially after just one week.

It's been an eye opener for my family. Positive thinking is real and it affects us all. We are surrounded by water - rain, clouds, the seas - and our bodies are at least 70% water (this figure for adults, says Dr Emoto).

How do you feel about all this? I want to start saying "thank you" to the water that I drink. And I probably should talk to my flowers!

* * *

Dr Emoto has even tested how water crystals react to national anthems! Find them and read more about the water crystal experiments here. He has also written several books so check them out. They would make a meaningful gift and provide truly good ideas for new year's resolutions!

You'll find lots of information on google. To get you started, see videos here and here and a selection of water crystals here.

Wow! I'd love to know if there is any scientific reason as to why this happens... but it will definitely make me be more positive! :P
